How do I tell if there's water in my outboard fuel?
Fuel smell / water in fuel · Symptom: Sputtering, stalls, fuel odor, water seen in filter/separator.
Quick answer: Most often: condensation in vented tank, ethanol phase separation, leaking fuel fitting/line (odor). Start here: FUEL SMELL: stop, no sparks/smoking, ventilate, find leak before running. If that doesn't fix it, work through the checks below, and see a marine mechanic if you're unsure.
Likely causes (most to least common)
- Condensation in vented tank
- Ethanol phase separation
- Leaking fuel fitting/line (odor)
- Rainwater via cap or vent
Safe owner checks & fixes
- FUEL SMELL: stop, no sparks/smoking, ventilate, find leak before running.
- Drain a few ounces into a clear glass jar, let sit ~30 min; layer at bottom = water/phase separation (Mercury).
- Drain water separator/filter per manual.
- Phase-separated fuel cannot be fixed with additives — remove fuel (professional removal recommended for built-in tanks).
- Install/replace a fuel-water separator.
Parts / tools
Clear jar, water-finding paste, separator filter, absorbent pads.
Call a marine mechanic when
Phase separation in a built-in tank (professional removal); any fuel leak you can't fix by replacing an external hose/fitting; fuel in the bilge. If you're on the water and unsafe, call TowBoatUS/Sea Tow or the Coast Guard (VHF 16).
