Why has my outboard lost power or won't plane?
Loss of power / won't plane · Symptom: Runs but sluggish, won't reach plane or normal RPM.
Quick answer: Most often: trim too far in/out, too much load or poor weight distribution, damaged or wrong-pitch prop, spun hub, fuel restriction. Start here: Check for warning lights first (overheat/oil/low-pressure modes cut power). If that doesn't fix it, work through the checks below, and see a marine mechanic if you're unsure.
Likely causes (most to least common)
- Trim too far in/out, too much load or poor weight distribution
- Damaged or wrong-pitch prop, spun hub
- Fuel restriction
- Fouled plugs
- Overheat protection mode
- Weed on prop/gearcase, fouled hull bottom
Safe owner checks & fixes
- Check for warning lights first (overheat/oil/low-pressure modes cut power).
- Inspect prop for damage/debris; check for weeds.
- Trim fully down to start, trim up once on plane.
- Redistribute weight forward.
- Fuel filter/plugs.
- Compare WOT RPM to manual's range with a tach; out of range = prop selection or engine issue.
Parts / tools
Prop wrench, spare prop, cotter pin/nut, tach.
Call a marine mechanic when
Can't reach the manual's WOT RPM range with a good prop; engine is in a warning/limp mode you can't clear; prop selection or engine height changes. If you're on the water and unsafe, call TowBoatUS/Sea Tow or the Coast Guard (VHF 16).
