My Broken BoatOutboard Help

Why does my prop slip, ventilate, or cavitate?

Prop ventilation / cavitation (RPM spikes, slips) · Symptom: RPM jumps without more speed, especially in turns or rough water.

Quick answer: Most often: trimmed out too far (ventilation), engine mounted too high on transom, damaged prop or gearcase, missing diffuser ring. Start here: Trim down and re-test. If that doesn't fix it, work through the checks below, and see a marine mechanic if you're unsure.

Likely causes (most to least common)

  1. Trimmed out too far (ventilation)
  2. Engine mounted too high on transom
  3. Damaged prop or gearcase, missing diffuser ring
  4. Weeds/debris on prop (cavitation)
  5. Bent blade or burrs
  6. Spun prop hub

Safe owner checks & fixes

  1. Trim down and re-test.
  2. Remove debris; inspect blades for bends/nicks.
  3. Have damaged prop repaired by a prop shop.
  4. Mercury PVS props: plug sizes tune venting.
  5. Engine height changes: mechanic/dealer.
