My Broken BoatOutboard Help

Why won't my primer bulb firm up?

Primer bulb soft / won't firm up · Symptom: Bulb stays squishy or collapses.

Quick answer: Most often: air leak: loose connector or bad O-ring at quick-connect, failed check valves in bulb (installed backwards or worn), cracked hose or bulb. Start here: Bulb arrow points toward engine. If that doesn't fix it, work through the checks below, and see a marine mechanic if you're unsure.

Likely causes (most to least common)

  1. Air leak: loose connector or bad O-ring at quick-connect
  2. Failed check valves in bulb (installed backwards or worn)
  3. Cracked hose or bulb
  4. Empty tank / pickup out of fuel
  5. Collapsed bulb = clogged vent or pickup

Safe owner checks & fixes

Parts / tools

Call a marine mechanic when

Leak at the engine-side fitting or fuel pump; bulb new and correctly fitted but still won't firm (suspect pickup or anti-siphon valve in tank). If you're on the water and unsafe, call TowBoatUS/Sea Tow or the Coast Guard (VHF 16).
